In November 2007 The UN General Assembly established that 15 September of each year should be observed as the International Day of Democracy (Resolution A/62/7).

This annual celebration provides an important opportunity to assess the level of democracy in the world and highlight the need of democratic governance to ensure global peace and development.

Therefore in this Day, UN member states, intergovernmental organisations, NGOs and individuals are invited to organize activities and events with the aim to increase the public awareness on democracy, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
