Unasur to Create South American Defense School

The Union of South American Nations (Unasur) will create the first South American School of Defense to train military officers of the 12 member countries of the regional bloc, it was reported today.

According to the head of the Center of Strategic Defense Studies for Unasur’s South American Defense Council, Alfredo Fori, representatives of the member states are working on drawing up statutes and courses that will be included in the study program.

After participating in the Unasur Conference on Natural Resources for a Integral Development of the Region, Forti noted the plan will be presented to the Ministers of Defense in November.

“This is a very important advance in the coordination and defense of the Unasur member countries that, for the first time in our history, will mean an opportunity to draft our own thinking about identity and defense, structured in a single school for our countries,” affirmed Forti.

Forti also reported that the first South American military training aircraft is being designed and constructed, a project that is currently in its second stage and will be presented to the 12 Ministers of Defense in October.
